Between Ellis Island and Philadelphia, it had become Americanized as Fisher. The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, according to Eddie, the family's surname was originally either Tisch or Fisch. His many hits during this period, all well remembered, include: "Anytime" (his first big hit), "Oh, My Pa-Pa", "Wish You Were Here", "I Need You Now", "Dungaree Doll", "I'm Walking Behind You", "Heart", "Games That Lovers Play" and "Somebody Like You". Because he became a local star, Fisher dropped out of high school in the middle of his senior year to pursue his career.Īt the height of his popularity, during the 1950s, Fisher was, along with Perry Como and Elvis Presley, RCA Victor's top-selling pop vocalist. He also performed on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, a popular radio show which later moved to TV. He made his radio debut on WFIL, a local Philadelphia radio station. His fifth wife, Betty Lin, passed away from lung cancer on April 15, 2001.įisher, fourth of seven children, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Russian-born Jewish immigrants Kate (née Winokur) and Joseph Fisher. He must be given credit, however, for owning up to his own actions, which led to the degradation of his career. It seems some of the women in his past, including Debbie Reynolds, did not care for his portrayal of them. ![]() ![]() Eddie Fisher has written two autobiographies, the latest "Been There, Done That" published with great controversy. For a few years he was married to Connie Stevens and they had two daughters, Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher before divorcing in 1968. From there Liz went on to star in Cleopatra (1963), with Richard Burton, another scandal and divorce for Liz. He and Liz did the movie BUtterfield 8 (1960), which actually earned Taylor an Academy Award, though it was received with mixed reviews. The bad publicity that followed did a great deal of damage to Eddie's career, while it actually increased the amount of money Elizabeth was offered for films. She had been widowed earlier that year when her husband Mike Todd, Eddie's best friend, died in a plane crash. ![]() Later that year, the scandal of the decade broke when stories of Eddie's affair with Elizabeth Taylor were made public. In 1955 Eddie married Debbie Reynolds and daughter Carrie Fisher was born a year later, followed by son Todd Fisher in l958. A deal of that magnitude was almost unheard of at this time and helped push Fisher towards being one of the most popular singers by 1954. This show proved to be so popular that Coke then offered Eddie a $1 million contract to be their national spokesperson. In 1953 Eddie Fisher was given his own fifteen-minute TV show called Coke Time (1953), sponsored by the Coca-Cola company. He was one of the most popular artists during the first half of the 1950s, selling millions of records and hosting his own TV show. For instance, if your DIY project includes twenty 12 watt lights, then you will need a transformer having a rating of at least 240 Watts. You need to add up the required wattage of the lights you want to operate before you go shopping for a suitable transformer. Most transformers in the market range from 44-900 Watts. These transformers plug into your GFCI-protected outdoor electrical outlet and help bring down the regular 120V voltage to a mere 12V. ![]() We are talking about the step-down transformers here. You can install them on your own, provided you stick to some basic rules that can help you wire them efficiently. Since landscape lights are low voltage lights, you do not need to call a professional electrician. They were interested in looking at all the requisitions for the GM’s house. These items were closely watched, and I even had a visit one day from the Director of Finance and some strange people from the corporate office. Finally, I was able to see the work I was doing was not going unnoticed. Lemons and limes to the bars were a reverse to the booze for the kitchen. The booze to the kitchen which I’m pretty sure didn’t all make it to the soup (Cheffie) was a credit to the beverage cost and a debit to the food cost. Same with the cafeteria food as it became a debit to employee benefits. Same for the booze and oddly enough it was a big number, then a credit to the beverage cost. The cost controller totaled these requisitions each month and sent the summary up to accounting.įood to the GM’s house was a credit to food cost and a debit to GM’s expense. Each one of these other items was costed and it then got recorded as a credit to either the food or the beverage cost depending on what family the products requested belonged to. Odd I thought as the main requisitions piled high in the corner of the office never to see the light of day again. Every one of these “other orders” caught the attention of the cost controller each month as he requested I keep a separate and complete copy of each “other” requisition. I thought at the time this was interesting, but I had no idea that it all meant something. But then every once and a while I would get requisitions from other places the general managers house, the executive offices, the staff cafeteria and then the chef would also order booze for the kitchen and the bars ordered food like limes, lemons and juices. Boxes and boxes of wine, beer and spirits for the bars to pick-up. Many carts full of food from the freezer, fridge and dry goods room every day were delivered to the kitchen. My job was to fill all the requisitions for the kitchens and the bars. As a young lad one of my first jobs in hospitality was a food and beverage storeman. Let’s do the credits for goods at cost first. These transactions are handled separately but their values effect the same accounts on your statements. Credits come in two forms credits for goods at cost and credit for goods at retail. The food cost percentage and the beverage cost percentage. We want to give F&B credits for their goods that are used in other departments, so we can keep a close eye on the cost of goods sold percentage. We do appreciate all their hard work, but we don’t give them any credit on our books, sorry. In the case of maintenance, it’s a non-operating department (no revenues) so it gets no such credit. In rooms we don’t do anything like this (sorry rooms folks). In F&B we buy products, food and beverage and we manufacture goods and sell them for a higher price. Rooms has no such cost of goods account because they are not producing anything they do in F&B. The reason why F&B is special is because it has cost of goods sold accounts. Why is F&B so special? I have heard this one a hundred times. Or better still why don’t we credit rooms when staff members stay over because of bad weather or business volumes. Someone once asked me why we don’t credit maintenance for their costs when used in other departments. The first thing we want to look at is why we need to credit the F&B operation for its goods used in other parts of our business. This article examines all the usual credits, the different types, the proper way to take them and why we need to take them. You want to insure its done consistently and fairly. Giving the proper credits to your food and beverage operation is an important task. ![]() ![]() ![]() But Dederer and her memoir are both troubled by the meditator’s worst enemy, the monkey mind.
